Fort Square and Contemporary Culture
Fort Square Presbyterian Church seeks to speak a word of grace into the
confusion of our contemporary culture. We see ourselves as having a
responsibility to minister truth and grace that we might make an impact
on a broken world. The call to proclaim truth means that we speak God's
call to repentance to our culture; it also means that we live and speak
His word of forgiveness and healing to those who struggle with
brokenness.
We are a center for resources within our presbytery for alternatives to
abortion. In addition to having members who are trained to counsel
women in problem pregnancies, we have connections with a number of
groups who are supportive to women and men going through difficulties.
We have the resources to help those struggling with guilt from
abortions to find healing and forgiveness in the context of local
support groups. In addition, we have the resources to help you discover
how adoption might serve as an alternative to abortion We also have
many families who have adopted children and would be glad to help you
if you are considering adopting a child into your home. We support
Presbyterians Pro-Life, a national organization speaking out for life
within our denomination.
We are learning what it means to care for those struggling with sexual
dysfunction. We believe that God can bring healing and hope into your
situation and have the ability to connect you with a support group in
the community for those wishing to find victory in this area of their
lives. In addition, we support One by One, a ministry within our
denomination to help those struggling with sexual dysfunction find
victory in their lives
Renewal Work within the PCUSA
Several years ago we became one of the first churches involved
in the growing “Confessing Church” movement. The movement, begun in
response to a need for Biblical emphasis within our denomination,
continues to seek helpful and creative ways to call our denomination
back to Biblical fidelity. Our statement reads as follows:
The session of Fort Square Presbyterian Church meeting this 17th day of
April, 2001, joins faithful believers throughout the Church in
confessing:
· That Jesus Christ alone is Lord of all and the way
of salvation.
· That holy
Scripture is the triune God’s revealed Word, the Church’s only
infallible rule of faith and life.
· That God’s
people are called to holiness in all aspects of life. This
includes honoring the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman,
the only relationship within which sexual activity is appropriate.
We therefore announce our commitment to the Confessing Church Movement
and we implore all Presbyterians who share these historic Christian
convictions to:
· Renew their individual commitments to the above
confessions.
· Urge their
session and presbytery to affirm these confessions and to
declare that they will not ordain, install or employ in any ministry
position any person who will not affirm them.
· Urge General Assembly to instruct the General Assembly
Council to require that all program personnel uphold these confessions
and ensure that the confessions are followed faithfully in all programs
and policies of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
